(More customer reviews)I've been doing a lot of offshore sailing lately and decided that I needed to find a way to keep my smart phone, ipod, and kindle charged up while away from 110 power. I had a cigarette lighter type charger for my phone, but nothing that would work for the others. Since I'd be outside and in the sun a lot, I figured solar was the way to go but wasn't sure that I'd be able to find something that would work for all three devices.
I spent a lot of time looking around online and saw plenty of chargers. Most of them were actually chargers with batteries - the solar cells charge a battery, and the phone, ipod, whatever charges off of that battery. Charging a battery to charge my device seemed like having an unecessary "middleman" to me, so I kept looking. Then I found the Suntactics PC5. This solar charger charges directly via USB - no middleman battery. I had a trip coming up the first of October, so I figured I'd take a chance and try it out. I purchased my PC5 charger in September, 2010.
I used the PC5 on that and a subsequent trip covering almost all of October and November - It worked flawlessly. It actually seems to charge my Droid X at about the same rate as my AC charger, and my ipod faster than the battery operated speaker I use at home). It works great for charging my kindle too. I just open the PC5 up, set it in the sun and connect whatever I need to charge.
While heading out east for one trip, I was stuck at O'Hare airport for a few hours and couldn't find a free outlet near my gate, so I just took a seat near the window and charged in the sun. Every time I set it up I got comments and questions about the rig.
The charger works great, is compact and easy to carry/store and it's "green". What more could you ask for? I couldn't be happier with mine.
