Lenmar 2-Hour AA/AAA Nimh Charger Kit

Lenmar's main business is batteries and chargers, so don't be put off by the fact they don't have a bunny or anything. I've used their products for years and have always been happy with them. This is the best one yet. It doesn't need to be plugged into a wall socket, so it can sit on your desk or wherever, making it much more convenient to use. The two hour charge time applies to charging two 2000 milliamp hour batteries [four are included]. It takes about three hours to charge four, and up to four hours to charge four 2700 milliamp hour batteries, which is still more than twice as fast as most good chargers in this price range. It charges AAA's in about the same amount of time. It includes both a standard 120 volt plug and a 12 volt cigar lighter plug for your car so you can charge batteries on trips. Nice!

I read about Rayovac's patent on the I-C3 technology before this product came to market and naturally I was skeptical. A few months after it came to market I decided to try it out.
For over 6 months I've been using these batteries in our toothbrushes, cameras, electric screwdriver, remote controls, two-way radios, CD players, anything that uses AA or AAA. The product exceeds my greatest expectations.
Disregard the high cost comments. This should be viewed as an investment. I can get the batteries locally for about $3.45 each. Figuring 25 cents for an alkaline battery you recover the cost after 14 recharges. 120 recharges and you've paid for the charger.
My family loves this thing. It completely changes your view of battery operated appliances. Not one of these batteries has gone bad. I have a pocket radio that I use constantly. One charge lasts over a week. The batteries do not die suddenly. When in doubt I can top off the battery in less than 15 minutes.
We are never out of batteries and we have an entirely new mindset now that it doesn't cost anything to discharge a battery. At the same time we aren't throwing batteries in the trash can.
It is our view that a battery that costs 25 cents plus shipping and handling per use is far more expensive than one that costs 15 minutes.

Rayovac's patent-pending I-C3 technology (In-Cell Charge Control) puts the control of the recharging into the battery, instead of the charger. This Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology offers fast, safe, reliable charging and provides you with power that lasts longer and is less expensive than constantly throwing away alkaline batteries.

This charger works great. Automatic stopping at 15 minutes, then trickle charges if you leave the batteries in the charger. There's a cooler fan when its on the 15 minutes cycle.
The 15 minutes charge only works on Rayovac I-C 3 types of battery, the charger works for other types of rechargeables also, NiMH and MiCd, in the overnight mode. The I-C 3 batteries can be charged in other chargers also, at the charger's rated speed. The PS5 can be used in countries with 120V-240V outlets. Outlet adapters not supplied.

UltraLast Green High Power/Capacity NiMH 8-Pack AA Review

UltraLast Green High Power/Capacity NiMH 8-Pack AA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The package of this product (UltraLast Green High Power/Capacity NiMH 8-Pack AA) proudly advertises "LASTS Up To 3 YEARS". This sounds really amazing, because even SANYO eneloop Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries can only claim 2 years of storage life (the actual claim is "retain about 80% of energy after 2 years of storage at 20 degree C"). That's why I wanted to try those UltraLast cells, even though they are priced higher than most other pre-charged batteries.
When I received those UltraLast cells, I was shocked to find out that they are all completely discharged (terminal voltage 0.6-0.7V). This has never happened with any low-self-discharge cells I have tested. So I visited 'ultralastgreen dot com' to search for more information. As it turns out, the actual claim on the web site is:
"Can be charged as many as 500 times, or up to three years."
In other words, it means that those cells have a service life of up to three years (which sounds ridiculously short to me). It does NOT mean that they can retain charge for up to three years. Based on my initial observation, those cells are probably suffering from rapid self-discharge problem, just like all other ordinary NiMH cells with capacity 2500mAh or over.
Although one can argue that the product description didn't actually say 'Pre Charged' or 'Low Self Discharge', that still leaves the claim of 'High Power/Capacity'. Those UltraLast cells are rated for only 2400mAh, which is much lower than today's high capacity NiMH cells (typically 2700mAh or more). Actual measurement on my La Crosse BC-900 showed much worse results: two out of four cells tested were initially under 1000mAh. After several deep discharge/recharge cycles, three cells reached 2300mAh, while the fourth one remains stuck at 1100mAh.
Basically, those UltraLast Green 'High Power/Capacity' cells are just ordinary rechargeable NiMH cells with nothing special to offer. Yet they are being sold at a premium price under misleading claims. My purchase turns out to be a complete waste of time and money. Hopefully, you who read this will take my gentle advice: avoid this piece of junk!
[Update on Apr 9, 2010]
The lowest-performing cell finally reached 2100mAh after four or five discharge/recharge cycles. So for that I bumped the rating up one notch.
[Update on Aug 21, 2010]
Long term storage test data: After three months sitting on the shelf, the average remaining charge of those Ultralast Green 'High Power' cells is just 49%. This is similar to the self-discharge rate for ordinary NiMH cells.

Powerex Battery charger w/8 2700 mAh Batteries

I've had one of these for more than a year. It's the best charger for NiMH's, which I use in everything except devices that are going to sit for a year, like smoke detectors or clock backup (a NiMH will lose about 30% of its charge per month just sitting). It's bad for batteries to be overcharged, so for devices that an odd number of batteries (like my FRS radios that use 3) the chargers that do only pairs are inadequate. The Maha also has superior charge circuitry that optimally charges each cell. It's better for the environment to use rechargeables than to throw away alkalines, and cheaper too! A 220 volt transformer is available from Maha if you're going to Europe.

UltraLast Green 4AA/AAA Lunar Charger with 4 AA Everyday Precharged Batteries Review

UltraLast Green 4AA/AAA Lunar Charger with 4 AA Everyday Precharged Batteries
Average Reviews:

CHARGER:
This is one of the oddest looking chargers I have ever seen; but it is also one of the most fun (I am talking here about the lunar glow top and the easy battery removal). It is quite easy to place the batteries. It takes either 4 "AAs" or 4 "AAAs". To remove them after charging, just push the top gently and all batteries will pop-out easily.
The "glow". The top of the charger glows alien green. It slowly pulsates while charging. Once done, it will stop pulsating but give you a steady green glow.
You can also bring it to a trip to Asia and plug it to 220V; no problem. It is rated 100-240v and 50/60hz
BATTERIES:
The batteries came pre-charged as described. I used a Lacrosse BC-700 to test the batteries. After doing a charge/test mode on all 4 batteries, each battery charged within the 2120 to 2280 mAhs. Not bad, considering they are rated as 2100 mAhs.
The product came in a brown recycled cardboard. Charger and batteries were made in China. UL listed.
CONS:
The charger only charges in pairs - either 2 or 4.
It is a bit bulky.

Rayovac Rechargeable NiMH Batteries, AA-size, 8-count Carded Pack Review

Rayovac Rechargeable NiMH Batteries, AA-size, 8-count Carded Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The latest family of Rayovac rechargeable NiMH batteries are all missing one thing: the capacity rating. Previously, you can see the charge capacity (such as '2500mAh') marked on every package and also on each cell. But newer Rayovac rechargeable NiMH cells are just grouped into three classes ('Everyday-Use', 'High-Energy' and 'Hybrid'), with vague claims such as 'Up to 275 photos' printed on their packages.
Of course, those claims make very little sense to us, because Rayovac never tell us which camera was used, and under what test conditions were those photos taken.
After a lot of searching, I was able to find the spec sheet for those cells from rayovacindustrial dot com:
- NM715-4OP 'Everyday-Use' AA, 'Up to 275 photos': capacity=1400mAh
- NM715-4B 'High-Energy' AA, 'Up to 375 photos': capacity=1900mAh
- LD715-4A 'Hybrid' AA, 'Up to 400 photos': capacity=2100mAh
The item offered here is the NM715-8OP (the 'OP' stands for 'Opening Product'). It has the LOWEST capacity amoung all Rayovac NiMH batteries. I have tested some in my La Crosse BC-900 Battery Charger, and the average capacity is actually higher than spec at 1500mAh. But this number is still very low by today's standard for NiMH AA cells. So although the price looks attractive, this is just not a good value.
As of this writing, this 8-pack (NM715-8OP) is actually priced higher than two 4-pack (NM715-4OP). Furthermore, the Rayovac 4.0 AA 4-PACK is available at even lower cost. Those are low-self-discharge cells with higher capacity of 2100mAh. So it is a no-brainer which package you should buy.
[Update on July 16, 2010]
I recently discovered a hidden benefit of those Rayovac 'Opening Product' AA cells: they are exactly the same size as alkaline AA cells, while other NiMH cells with capacity 2000mAh or over are all slightly thicker. So for some appliances with extremely tight battery compartment (such as the Rayovac Sportsman Xtreme 1W LED Flashlight), those are the only rechargeable cells I can use.
[Update Sep 4, 2010]
As if the offerings above is not confusing enough, Rayovac has now discontinued the 'Hybrid' series, and replaced it with another two types:
- LD715-4OP 'Pre-Charged': capacity=1400mAh
- PL715-4 'Platinum Pre-Charged': capacity=2100mAh

OK it is a little pricey but for a unit with both an AC and a DC charger and 4 2500mah batteries included it isn't too expensive. However there are two things that caught me by surprise.
1) It will charge up to 4 AA NiMh batteries BUT ONLY 2 AAA NiMh batteries. The design doesn't have a way to insert 4 AAAs.
2) The photo at the top of the Amazon page make it look like there is an LED charge indicator for each battery; not so. There are four holes to see if there is a battery inserted, but just one charge lamp. No big deal. Just a bit misleading.
Otherwise this product does what I wanted.

While the other reviewer complains about 2050mah and indeed that's how the Amazon description reads today, the package I received is copyrighted 2003 and the batteries read "AA/HR6/DC1500 NIMH/1.2v 2300mAh Standard charge 230mA for 16h". Powerex MH-C204W 1-Hr Worldwide Charger w/8 2700mAh AA batteries Review

Powerex MH-C204W 1-Hr Worldwide Charger w/8 2700mAh AA batteries
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Maha MH-C204W charger when I bought my Canon A95 digital camera in March 2005. I looked online for quite a while before deciding on the Maha model, based, I confess, on great reviews. Of course, we all read reviews, so that's what I did. However, I had trouble with the charger soon after I got it. It wouldn't charge the batteries. I thought the top contacts on the charger were not properly contacting the batteries. In the end, after emailing Maha, they told me to send it back for a replacement. The 2nd one has been working perfectly fine for 16 months. I'm not afraid to tell anyone who reads my review that I had trouble with my first one because stuff happens, as we all know. However, I'd like to again mention that my 2nd one has worked wonderfully right out of the box ever since.
One reviewer said his discharge cycle didn't work on Bank B because of the unit's heat sensing circuitry being located under Bank B, thus shutting down Bank B before the two batteries there can charge. I've done the discharging a few times and can say that it's been fine so far. It is interesting, however, that this shutdown problem can occur, meaning that Maha should redesign this model to prevent that potential problem. Now back to better comments.
I like the fact that this charger can accomodate voltage levels from 100V to 240V, as well as 50Hz or 60Hz. You can go anywhere in the world with this model. All this without the big brick at the end of your plug-in cord. You can also detach the cord from the charger and wrap it around the charger to give yourself a very compact little package. A good idea I've found is to attach a good rubber band at the prong end of the cord, so when you're done wrapping the cord around the charger body, you can keep the cord from unravelling by simply wrapping the rubber band around the wound cord. This produces a very compact and lightweight package that neatly fits into my small carry-on bag, or my suitcase, whatever.
The Maha model has four charging stages: startup, rapid, top-off, and maintenance. In the end, your batteries will be 98% fully charged. Awesome. The MH-C204W also has an integrated battery conditioner to rescue old and degraded NiMH batteries by applying high current pulses.
Well, there are lots of chargers out there, and I'm not going to say that this model is the only great one. If you want the Lacrosse BC-900, that's okay, too, because it is a great charger with individual digital readouts for each cell. I had to choose one to go with, so I those the Maha MH-C204W and can honestly say I'm very happy with it. Good luck in choosing your personal charger.

As a professional photographer, I use many AA batteries in my Nikon SB-900 Flash unit.
A camera flash really puts AA batteries to test. I have used brands such as Sanyo, Lenmar, Energizer, all with varying results. One aspect I constantly measure is the cycle time of the flash unit which is a direct test of battery stamina and performance. With these power2000 batteries in my flash, I see virtually no lag between shots even after 100 flash bursts, they just keep on reenergizing the internal capacitor an an unbeleivable rate.
I have stocked up on these Power2000 batteries and I highly recommend them.
